Gina Kuschke’s Field: A Sonic Epilogue to Takes on the Sublime
Night Café is pleased to host ‘Field’, a sound installation by Gina Kuschke, as part of ‘Notes on the Sublime’, an epilogue to the exhibition ‘Takes on the Sublime’.
With a score written and produced by Kuschke, the installation positions sound as a parallel to her painting practice, each functioning as a distinct yet interconnected articulation of the same language, conveyed through different mediums. Both her sound and visual work have an atonal language, moving beyond a fixed key, with melody and harmony never anchored to a tonal center. Like her mark-making in painting, the sound flows in shifting directions, varying speeds, and rhythmic punctuations, creating a dynamic and fluid structure.
‘‘The hum of the ground sets the stage for the eternal performance of the mark.
My interruption can now begin.
Notes tear through space and fold into silence
Action: Swallowed
Mark: Pulsing
The painting is the snake
And I am its shedded skin.’’
