'Acts of Transience '
Night Café is thrilled to announce: ‘Acts of Transience’, a duo exhibition of Mandy Franca and Katrina Cowling. In this exhibition, the artists capture the fleeting moments of every- day life, and punctuate them with their distinctive mark-making techniques that act as signs and markers of existence.

Mandy Franca delves into existential inquiries and the interconnectedness of human experience through her practice. Her work captures everyday aspects of life, using gestural mark-making to physically rework photographs taken with her iPhone to solidify transitory moments in our rapidly changing world. Drawing from personal experiences shaped by cross-cultural upbringing, Franca contextualises individual experiences within a broader communal framework, emphasising care as a fundamental aspect of being.
Katrina Cowling’s sculptures mirror Franca’s gestural mark-making as spatial drawings in light and ceramic. Trained as a neon-bender, her work explores vulnerability, intimacy, and failure, grounded in a consideration of materiality and process. Precarity is evident in all of her restless sculptures: leaning, flailing, teetering, trembling, supporting, always on the brink of collapse. The tension this generates creates an atmosphere of poetic friction that punctuates the fleetingness of existence.
